July 1, 2004-Red Sox vs. Yankees (WCBS Radio)
Twenty years ago today.....the last night there was truly Aura and Mystique in the Bronx as Jeter went flying into the stands (one of many great moments that night). John Sterling and Charley Steiner with the call.

-This was one of two Yankee games I went to in 1978. It was Photo Album Night (sponsored by Dellwood!) and there was a massive traffic tie-up on the George Washington Bridge that had me wondering if my parents and I would make it on time but we got into the Stadium just as the Robert Merrill recording of the National Anthem was playing. I still have the photo album and the scorecard nearly 46 y...

One of the most famous attractions at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair was the "Ford Magic Skyway" presented by Walt Disney as visitors rode Ford Mustangs on a journey back into the prehistoric past and into the future. Unlike other Disney attractions at the Fair, the Magic Skyway would not be duplicated at Disneyland or Disney World, though one dinosaur scene became part of the Disneyland Rai...

Since my upload of the pilot movie for the 1977 TV series "Operation Petticoat" is proving to be my most popular upload, here are *both* parts of the show's first regular series episode, "Yeoman Hunkle, Yeoman Hunkle." A huge key to the Yankees winning this World Series in Game 6 despite losing Game 2 at Home was winning 2 of 3 in Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. If the Yankees didn't win 2 of 3 in Los Angeles even if the Yankees won Game 6 it still would have had to go to Game 7.

I have to admit I only realized the anniversary was just hitting us yesterday so I worked quickly to put this up because if I didn't have it up to coincide with the anniversary, there wouldn't be much of a reason to post it afterwards. Yeah, this was the last time we could feel secure about how history had always unfolded. This game is more like the final coda to Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS from the Yankee fan's standpoint. As for what followed, I try to blot it out of my memory......or fantasize about Tony Clark hitting a walk-off HR to win the pennant in Game 6 and how Sterling might have called that!

I was at that Mets game when the message came up. The Yankees were never the same after that, and truly never had a catcher for ten years until they acquired Matt Nokes. When Thurman died, it felt like the heart and soul of the Yankees had gone down with plane too.

A few year later, in 1982, the Yanks botched the 1B situation so badly (trading away a young Fred McGriff in a package for a used-up John Mayberry) that they ended up playing Dave Collins at 1st. Collins was 5'9"…allegedly. Graig Nettles could barely see him over the crown of the infield. (Mattingly was up by the end of 1983, thankfully.)

What I (or some other clever person) need to do is cut this into the unabridged TBS broadcast, so we have as much Kiner/McCarver/Zabriskie as possible, and only need to endure Skip Caray and co. to fill in the gaps. Still not as good as having the full WOR available but would satisfy the goals of completeness and Mets-ness as well as can be..

That's exactly how I heard the news. We were getting a cookout ready in our backyard. They must have been playing a twinight doubleheader to be playing at that time. Back then about a third of their schedule was not televised. Games on cable hadn't really gotten going yet. We didn't have cable anyway. They only had 3 announcers who worked a rotation system, so the fact that two were on the radio indicates it was not televised. What a shocker. So sad.
